an attempt at humour = CORNY    The original strip is in black and white. This was colored in using MS Paint.

I like the colors at least. :P

The original dialogue in this strip is in my native tongue, hiligaynon so i made a copy and tagalogized it using MSpaint.  This one’s for my no.2 fan, duduy

there’s gotta be more!

Every third week of October, our town celebrates the Masskara Festival, a week full of merry-making activities wherein the locals wear happy masks, don colorful costumes and dance on the streets. It is a well-attended celebration despite the bad weather that usually accompanies it.

Today though, we missed the usual rains. For a change, the weather was pleasantly warm and clear, and there was nobody parading around looking like drowned, grinning rats. I feel it was our best festival yet. . But apparently, not everyone felt the same way.

We were watching the last of the dance parade pass when my three-year old niece Althea asked, her brows furrowed:

“Is the Masskara over, Mama Ye?”

“Yes  dear,” I said, thinking she must be tired. She had been listless eversince the parade began, watching the whole event distractedly. “Weren’t they all wonderful?”

“Yes,” she said impatiently, looking up the clear, blue skies “but when’s the rain coming?”

komikera

I‘m a big fan of  witty comics and cartoons. My first treasured reading material was Funny Komiks  not Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes or Grimm’s FairyTales (i’ve memorized my first nursery rhyme and learned about Cinderella in College, while i was volunteering at a daycare center) I learned to read through Niknok and Planet op da Eyps. My greatest hero then was Mahimud Ali, the carabao version of the great boxer, Ali.

Matsutsu,Mahimud Ali and Niknok were but a few of my fave comic characters

Then during my teen years, i got hooked with the Super Friends of the DC universe, the Fantastic Four and all those beautifully drawn comic superheroes.

       My highschool berks have superpowers!

Recently, i’ve been following Polgas of Pugad Baboy and Peanuts in the dailies. These quick, witty shorties somehow makes my day complete. Cartoonists like the late Charles Schulz, brothers Pol and Lan Medina, and my brother Lex (he used to make tons of comics -his very own- when he was only 10 years old) are but a few of those i admire in the field of cartooning.

So what kung mababaw kaligayahan ko? hehehehe

Anyway, I tried my hand at cartooning once, since i was really into it. Here are my first few attempts at about… twelve years ago. I still use them as demo materials for my summer art workshops

Kurdapya da Sosyalera, Pidel Vamos, & Elvis da Karaoke King are a few of my first cartoons

I will be posting some of my own comic strips after this, but don’t hold your breath. They’re nothing short of corny. :P

and speaking of comics… i have this friend who has this H-U-G-E collection of anything comic (and if you ask me, i think he’s one too :) Visit my friend
Gnel in his comiclab to see what i mean.
